Auto Insurance Policy Advice - How to File a Car Insurance Policy Complaint

At some point in your life you may need to file a complaint about your auto insurance policy. Depending on your insurance company you may be able to resolve the situation simply be speaking to the correct person, but if your insurance company digs in their heels you may have to work a little bit harder to reach a resolution.
The first thing to do when you have a complaint with your insurance company is to write everything down. You don't want to be relying on your memory when it comes time to file a formal complaint.
After you have a written account of the problem call the insurer directly and ask to speak with someone with the authority to resolve the problem. Ask the person their name and write it down. Explain the problem rationally and do not get emotional about it. If the person you speak to can resolve the problem ask for that resolution in writing and thank them for their time. If not ask them what the next step is to reach a resolution.
The next step will likely be an internal review at the insurance company. Copy your written account of the situation and include any other pertinent details before mailing it to the company. Make sure you keep the originals. Wait about a week and call them to make sure they received the material.
If you have still not reached a resolution the next step will either be binding arbitration or an official complaint with your state's department of insurance. If you are required to go to arbitration this will be clearly stated in the policy, if your state has authority over insurance complaints that process will be clearly defined as well.
Of course if you are not satisfied with any resolution you can always shop online for a new auto insurance policy. This will not only show your insurer you are displeased, but it will also save you a few hundred dollars since purchasing insurance online is less expensive than any other method.
